Hi all,
How are you? Lots to share with you this week! Here's what's up . . .
News in Brief
- "When Darkness Falls" winners coming this week!
- Vote for theme for Advanced Photomanip Month at The-Sacred-Space.
- All stock should be credited in manips. Saying "stock purchased" is not enough; we also have to say where, even if we don't give a direct link to the image itself.
- Creativity Challenges will get started soon!
- We will still be supporting Random Acts of Kindness.
- Good luck to all those returning to (or starting) school this week or next!
Please welcome . . .
Every week we will try to feature a new member of our community. If you
know of a new member (who has been here 6 months or less) and want to
have a "welcome" feature for them, please note their username to ChisSweetArt.
MarquisAmonArt has been with us on dA for about a month and has been wowing us with incredible macabre and horror deviations. ChisSweetArt caught up with him to learn about his hopes for his membership on dA, and she shared the following interview.
Q: So, what brought you to deviantART?
A: The vast community of art and those artists who share their work, experience, and skills, so that I can be part of an ongoing community that inspires art, and the ideas of creating.
Q: How can we support you, as a new member, in your artistic endeavors?
A: I would like to get to know more artists, their formats, their experiences, and their knowledge to provide me a base for understanding art better, and for developing my own skills further.
Q: What do you hope to gain from your time on dA?
A: I hope to find inspiration, community experience, a better level of skill, and a greater appreciation of others and the art that they create.
Welcome, MarquisAmonArt!
On crediting stock sources
We should all remember to add credits to our deviations as soon as we upload them, NOT later. It is not fair to the stock artists when we say, "Stocks ASAP" or "Stocks to be added later." If we have time to submit the file, we have time to credit. Or, we should wait to submit.
Also, please do not shoot the messenger here-- I just want to make sure people's voices are heard. But when we use stock and resources-- ANY stock image or resource, regardless of whether it is from dA or a pay-for site-- dA requires that we say where we got it. Saying "all stocks were purchased" is not considered attribution. Even if the stock provider does not require us to give them attribution (credit) when using the image, deviantART still does. That means if I bought the item from, for example, dreamstime.com, I should at least say, "Stock purchased from dreamstime.com." Please see FAQ #217: What are "Stock and Resources" and can I use them in my submissions?

Looking for a challenge?
There are a lot of manipulation challenges going on all over the community, in groups like:
These are great opportunities for learning, as some of them have themes, some introduce new tutorials to help you gain new skills, and others provide stock that you must incorporate in a creative way. If you have a challenge (NOT a contest, but a challenge) or are part of a challenge group, please let me know and I'll advertise it here.
CatherineCruz and I have been talking about starting periodic Creativity Challenges, where we will give you (1) a new technique or tool and (2) a piece of stock, and you have to do something "different" or "unique" with it. For example, we know forests make great backgrounds. What else can we use forests for? Or, what is a clever use for a mirror that we might not otherwise have thought of? We would cast popularity and number of favorites aside and just buckle down and focus on art, creativity, and learning. These are not "official" challenges at this point. Stay tuned; more info soon.
Photomanipulation Month: October
We have decided to have a "theme" for the month so that we can plan events around it. What's the theme? It's up to you! We at The-Sacred-Space have come up with a few; please vote for your favorite theme here!
If you are not already a member of our planning committee and want to be a part of this month's festivities, it's not too late. Note The-Sacred-Space or talk to nikkidoodlesx3.
